WHAT IS PILATES?

Pilates is a physical fitness system that focuses on developing core strength, flexibility, and overall body awareness. It was created by Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century and is based on six core principles: concentration, control, centering, precision, breath, and flow. The primary goal of Pilates is to create a balanced and harmonious body by working on the deep muscles of the abdomen, back, and pelvic floor. This region is often referred to as the "powerhouse" and serves as the foundation for all movements in Pilates.

In Pilates, the focus is on controlled and precise movements, emphasising quality over quantity. The exercises aim to elongate and strengthen muscles, improve flexibility, and promote overall body alignment and posture. It is considered a low-impact form of exercise, making it suitable for individuals of all ages and fitness levels.

The benefits of practicing Pilates include:

  • Improved core strength and stability

  • Increased flexibility and range of motion

  • Enhanced muscular strength and endurance

  • Better posture and body alignment

  • Reduced risk of injury

  • Stress relief and relaxation

  • Improved body awareness and coordination
